John 4:1-9

It is possible to make your heart so small that almost nothing hurts anymore. Stop looking. Stop listening. Keep your distance. But in John 4:1–9, Jesus shows us what a ministering heart looks like—and it refuses to close itself off. Weary from the journey, He sits beside Jacob’s well. The One who made the world feels the exhaustion of walking through it. Yet when a Samaritan woman approaches, His weariness does not extinguish His willingness. He reaches out.

“Give Me a drink.” A simple request crosses centuries of hostility. Jesus moves toward someone His culture taught Him to avoid. His compassion takes the initiative, crosses the divide, and makes room for another person—even when He is tired. That is the heart Christ is forming in His people. Ministry cannot be reserved for the days when we have energy to spare and nothing else to do. People need love in the middle of our weariness. And this calling belongs to every one of us. We are emissaries of the King. Following Jesus means letting Him enlarge our hearts until someone else’s need can interrupt our plans. A ministering heart reaches out—even when it is tired.
