James 4:1-6
James 4:1–6 exposes the sinful desires that wage war within the human heart and reveals that the source of many conflicts, quarrels, and divisions is our own selfish passions. James teaches that people fight and covet because they are driven by disordered desires they cannot satisfy. Even their prayers become corrupted, asking not for the glory of God, but to spend God’s blessings on their own pleasures. James then delivers a sobering warning that friendship with the world is spiritual adultery against God, because the values of the fallen world-system stand in opposition to Him. Yet in the midst of this sharp rebuke shines the hope of the Gospel: “But He giveth more grace” Though human pride resists God, the Lord abundantly gives grace to the humble who turn from worldly desires and submit themselves to Him.
