1 Peter 3:18-22

In 1 Peter 3:18–22, Peter presents Christ’s suffering and resurrection as His decisive victory and exaltation over all rebellious powers. Drawing on Enochic imagery, the “spirits in prison” recall the disobedient beings from Noah’s day, now subjected under Christ’s lordship. Through His resurrection, Christ proclaims His triumph, demonstrating that every hostile power stands defeated.
Baptism, in this light, becomes a participation in that victory—not a mere cleansing, but a symbolic act of spiritual warfare and allegiance to the risen Lord. Just as Noah was brought safely through the waters, believers pass through baptism into the realm of Christ’s victorious reign, where every authority and power is now made subject to Him.
